ALIMONY & CHILD SUPPORT

Family Law

Divorce and separation are some of the most stressful situations a family can experience. With complete information and support, you can get your situation under control. This website provides general information. Family law is complex. You are encouraged to contact a lawyer for help with family law issues.

Spousal Support

Spousal Support is money paid by one spouse to the other after they separate or divorce. It is sometimes called alimony or maintenance. Many factors may affect whether a married or common-law spouse is entitled to spousal support and how much support they should receive. De facto partners may also seek spousal maintenance.

Child Support

Children need financial support from their parents – and they have a legal right to it. When parents separate or divorce, they should try to agree on the amount of child support. If they ask a court to decide, the court will use guidelines to determine child support payments. Some child support guidelines fall under federal law, while others are under provincial or territorial law.

2017 Child Support Table Look-up

Important Tips for Using the Table Look-up
This child support table look-up will help you find the base amount of child support. You may wish to ask a lawyer for advice about your situation. The base amount is often not the final child support amount to be paid. For example, if there are special expenses such as child care or if you share custody, the amount will likely be different. Under the Federal Child Support Guidelines, the table amount is determined by:
  • the number of children;
  • the province or territory where the paying parent lives; and
  • the paying parent’s before tax annual income.
